Cruising Through Summer: How to Keep Your Car Happy and Healthy

July 17, 2024

Welcome to Foothill Auto Service's July Summer Blog! Today, we're taking a break from the regular grind and tuning into the melody of the season – summer. Cars aren't only methods of transport; they're your trusted companions on sunny road trips, beach getaways, and scenic routes, echoing the joyful chorus of summer. They're the machines that carry you through blazing hot days, help make memorable family vacations, and symbolize the spirit of freedom that summer creates. Above all, they're the reliable ally that keeps you cool and comfortable on the road, and that's why we believe in treating them with the TLC they warrant. So, whether you have a sporty convertible that loves to feel the summer breeze, a family minivan that's all set for the summer camp rush, or a hard-working sedan that's gearing up for the hot season - we've got you covered. We understand that every car owner has unique needs, especially in summer, so we're here to help you cruise through the season, keeping your car happy and healthy.

Keep your engine cool:

The summer's high temperatures can create more stress on your engine, which increases the risk of overheating. Your vehicle's coolant system is essential in regulating engine heat. Regular checks ensure it is filled to the appropriate level and operates appropriately. Coolant flushes are recommended to remove debris and rust particles that can accumulate over time, restricting efficient cooling. Routine maintenance on your vehicle engine reduces the risk of heat-related engine issues, securing optimal performance even in the summer heat.

Check your air conditioning:

Air conditioning is crucial for comfort during summer drives. You could face a hot, unpleasant journey if it's not performing at its best. The issue could lie in low refrigerant levels, a clogged condenser, or a worn-out compressor. Regular maintenance checks ensure these components function correctly. Additionally, the cabin air filters, responsible for clean air inside your vehicle, should be replaced as needed. They tend to collect dust and dirt, reducing airflow and system efficiency. Regular upkeep ensures a cool, comfortable drive even in scorching temperatures.

Tire Pressure:

Summer heat directly affects tire pressure, causing the air inside to expand, leading to overinflation. Overinflated tires can become problematic, resulting in uneven tire wear due to less tire surface in contact with the road, reducing grip and handling. This can sometimes lead to dangerous blowouts due to the increased internal pressure straining the tire structure. Regular tire pressure checks, especially before long trips, can help maintain optimal tire pressure levels. Proper tire maintenance is a critical factor in ensuring the safety and longevity of your tires and, overall, a smoother and safer drive in hot conditions.

Protect your car's exterior and interior:

Extreme summer sun can damage your car's paint and interior. Regularly wash and wax your vehicle to protect its paint. Use sunshades inside the car to protect your dashboard and seats from damaging UV rays and to keep the inside temperature down.

Battery Health:

Contrary to popular belief, the summer heat can be just as tough on your car's battery as the winter cold. Heat can speed up the chemical reaction inside a battery, causing the battery to be overcharged. This can significantly shorten the lifespan of your battery. Ensure your battery is in good shape and have it tested if it's been a few years since you replaced it.

Stay hydrated:

Keeping your car "hydrated" refers to maintaining optimal fluid levels, which is crucial for your car's performance and longevity. The engine oil lubricates moving parts to reduce friction and wear. Brake fluid transfers force into pressure for safe stops, while power-steering fluid helps in the easy turning of the steering wheel. Windshield washer fluid aids in visibility. These fluids can degrade or deplete over time and under extreme heat, impacting vehicle performance. Regular checks and refills, especially during summer, ensure your car runs smoothly, stays cool, and provides optimal safety and performance on the road.

At Foothill Auto Service, we believe that the key to a safer and more enjoyable summer drive is a well-maintained car. When your vehicle is in optimal condition, you can trust it to perform at its best, even in the most powerful heat. This allows you to focus on the joy of the journey, whether you're heading out on a summer road trip or running errands around town. It's summertime, and we are ready for a clean, shiny car to cruise the streets in. Here are some DIY auto detailing tips to get your car looking great again! Let's start with the leather If you have leather upholstery, buy a leather-cleaning kit and keep it in the vehicle. When you clean the oops and spills right away, you dramatically increase your chances of a complete cleanup without signs of an accident. If you wait, lipstick, ink, dye, and lipstick transfer from clothing (and plastic shopping bags) and can become permanent in as little as 24 hours. Pretreat your leather with a conditioner before you start the stain removal process. Wipe the leather down with a pre-treater, and then apply leather cleaner and the leather protection cream. Lubricate your hood hinges Before applying grease or oil, be sure to wipe down the hinges first. We recommend white lithium grease or a few drops of any ordinary motor oil. Move the hinge several times to work the grease in. and work it into both sides of each hinge. Once you are done, wipe away any excess to keep it from collecting debris.

It is common knowledge that before your kiddo can step onto the field, they have to get to a doctor for a sports check-up. Your car needs a similar check-up from your local mechanic shop. This can easily catch and prevent an issue before it grows into a big expensive one. We encourage you to schedule your car in for a professional inspection 3 times per year. Preventive maintenance gives you peace of mind; it also can save you thousands of dollars in repairs when a professional catches an issue early. The professional Auto Mechanics at Foothill Auto Service are trained to detect warning signs, preventing a small issue from snowballing into a large and expensive one. If you are looking to build a relationship with an auto mechanic, it is time to meet the friendly folks at Foothill Auto Service. When you have a mechanic shop familiar with your vehicle and is already in their system, you have a team you can turn to for all questions and concerns. Do you love to tinker? We have a few tips for items to check yourself to help keep your car in good condition. Replacing your cabin air filter regularly washing your vehicle changing out your wiper blades If you are handy and ambitious, other maintenance tasks are also necessary. Oil changes Belt, and hose replacements Tire rotations Battery inspections Most often, it is best to leave this to the professionals, as they not only have a trained eye to detect any anomalies, they also have proper equipment, and document any wear and tear that they see, and also keep their eye out for other issues arising in the future.
