Spotlight on Suspension: How to Handle Post-Winter Wear and Tear.

April 1, 2025

Keeping Your Ride Smooth and Stable as the Seasons Change.

Winter imposes significant challenges on vehicles, particularly affecting the suspension system due to severe conditions. Factors like potholes, icy roads, freezing temperatures, and road salt can have a substantial impact on suspension components during this season. Spring is an ideal time to inspect and maintain these systems for optimal performance. At Foothill Auto Service, we are dedicated to helping you understand how crucial it is to maintain your suspension while addressing any wear or damage caused by winter conditions.

Why Your Suspension System Matters

The suspension system plays a vital role in enhancing your vehicle's performance, comfort, and safety by regulating:

  • Absorbing Road Shocks: Ensuring a smooth ride even on uneven surfaces.
  • Maintaining Tire Contact: Keeping your tires firmly on the road for optimal handling and braking.
  • Enhancing Stability: Preventing excessive body roll and maintaining vehicle balance during turns.

After winter ends, you may notice indicators of suspension wear. These signs can manifest as uneven tire tread, the vehicle pulling to one side, excessive bouncing, or unusual noises. Failing to address these warnings could result in more serious issues like safety hazards and expensive repairs.

Common Suspension Issues After Winter

The severe winter conditions could potentially lead to various issues related to suspension, such as:

  • Worn Shocks and Struts: Potholes and rough roads can accelerate wear on these components, leading to decreased ride comfort and stability. Shocks and struts are critical for maintaining control and preventing excessive bouncing.
  • Damaged Springs: Coil springs may crack or break under the stress of icy roads, heavy loads, or sudden impacts. Broken springs can reduce your vehicle’s ability to absorb shocks effectively.
  • Rust and Corrosion: Road salt, while essential for melting ice, is highly corrosive and can weaken suspension components like control arms, bushings, and mounting points. Over time, this can lead to structural damage.
  • Misaligned Wheels: Sliding on ice or hitting potholes can throw your wheels out of alignment, affecting handling, causing uneven tire wear, and increasing fuel consumption.
  • Damaged Control Arms and Bushings: Control arms and bushings are integral to steering and suspension. These parts can wear out or become loose, resulting in vibrations, clunking noises, and reduced steering responsiveness.
  • Ball Joint Wear: Ball joints connect your control arms to the steering knuckles, allowing for smooth movement. Winter impacts can accelerate ball joint wear, leading to looseness and poor handling.

How to Handle Post-Winter Suspension Wear and Tear

To ensure your suspension system remains in optimal condition, adhere to these fundamental steps:

  • Inspect Your Suspension Components: Regular inspections can identify worn or damaged parts before they lead to major issues. Look for signs of leaking shocks, cracked springs, or rust. If you’re unsure, our experienced technicians at Foothill Auto Service can perform a comprehensive check.
  • Check Your Tires: Uneven tire wear, bald spots, or cupping often indicate suspension problems. Ensure your tires are properly inflated and aligned to maintain a smooth ride and reduce strain on suspension components.
  • Address Noises and Vibrations: Squeaks, clunks, or vibrations while driving may signal suspension wear. These symptoms shouldn’t be ignored, as they can indicate serious underlying issues.
  • Get a Wheel Alignment: Proper alignment ensures even tire wear and optimal handling. It’s especially important after a season of icy roads and potholes that can easily throw your alignment off.
  • Schedule a Professional Inspection: A certified technician can perform a thorough suspension check and recommend necessary repairs or replacements. At Foothill Auto Service, we specialize in pinpointing and resolving suspension issues efficiently.

Long-Term Suspension Care Tips

Besides tackling immediate concerns following winter, implementing long-term suspension maintenance strategies can prolong the life of your components and enhance your vehicle's overall performance. Here are some recommendations to consider:

  • Drive Carefully on Rough Roads: Avoid potholes whenever possible, and reduce speed when driving on uneven terrain.
  • Replace Suspension Components as Needed: Don’t wait for parts to completely fail. Proactive replacement of worn components can prevent more extensive damage.
  • Keep Suspension Clean: After winter, wash your vehicle thoroughly, including the undercarriage, to remove salt and debris that can corrode suspension components.
  • Monitor Ride Quality: Pay attention to how your vehicle handles. If you notice a rougher ride or reduced control, it’s time for an inspection.

The Importance of Timely Repairs

Postponing suspension repairs may result in more extensive and expensive damage. For instance:

  • Increased Tire Wear: Misaligned wheels or worn shocks can cause uneven tire wear, leading to premature tire replacement.
  • Compromised Safety: A failing suspension system can reduce your ability to control the vehicle, especially during sudden maneuvers or emergency stops.
  • Higher Repair Costs: Ignoring minor issues often results in larger, more expensive repairs down the road.

Promptly addressing suspension issues can save you money, improve safety, and offer a more comfortable driving experience.

It's summertime, and we are ready for a clean, shiny car to cruise the streets in. Here are some DIY auto detailing tips to get your car looking great again! Let's start with the leather If you have leather upholstery, buy a leather-cleaning kit and keep it in the vehicle. When you clean the oops and spills right away, you dramatically increase your chances of a complete cleanup without signs of an accident. If you wait, lipstick, ink, dye, and lipstick transfer from clothing (and plastic shopping bags) and can become permanent in as little as 24 hours. Pretreat your leather with a conditioner before you start the stain removal process. Wipe the leather down with a pre-treater, and then apply leather cleaner and the leather protection cream. Lubricate your hood hinges Before applying grease or oil, be sure to wipe down the hinges first. We recommend white lithium grease or a few drops of any ordinary motor oil. Move the hinge several times to work the grease in. and work it into both sides of each hinge. Once you are done, wipe away any excess to keep it from collecting debris.
